Inside Coco Schiffer’s Chic World: Style, Strategy, and Social Media Success

I first met Coco Schiffer in the spring of 2024, shortly after graduating college. My closet was a chaotic mix of clothes I’d accumulated from years of bars, clubs, fraternity parties, and classes—none of it seemed to reflect the person I was becoming. Although I had a sense of style, my wardrobe felt disconnected and unorganized. Working in the fashion industry in New York City, I needed a wardrobe that represented my evolving self, but instead, it felt like a random assortment of items that didn’t come together to create chic outfits.

Wanting a fresh perspective, I decided to hire the emerging wardrobe stylist, Coco Schiffer. When she arrived at my apartment, she was dressed impeccably and carried an air of determination that immediately reassured me I’d made the right choice. We spent nearly two and a half hours going through every item in my closet, starting with pants and working our way through accessories. By the end of the session, I felt an enormous sense of relief and had a completely new outlook on my wardrobe.

I’m reunited with Coco, who is known for her unique approach to styling the basics and her ability to curate standout looks for both brands and high-profile celebrities, like Karlie Kloss, showcasing her expertise in creating chic, impactful outfits. You’ve likely spotted Coco in her elevated, tailored basics, impeccably styled with fun accessories like her signature double belt and stacked rings. Her work has made waves on social media, further solidifying her presence as an influencer and stylist with a unique, forward-thinking perspective on fashion.

How did you first break into the fashion industry, and what inspired you to become a stylist?

It was all mindset. I took “put yourself out there” to heart and made it a daily practice. I knew in my bones this was what I was meant to do, and I worked my booty off. I had a full time job at the beginning and would stay up insane hours and work through the weekend getting through each client. No joke. Every single flight I took was spent creating decks for clients. Baby steps!

“Break into” is a loaded phrase — I’m still getting started! I spent months doing every single part of the styling job and figured out very quickly what I loved doing and what I didn’t love. Once I was able to define my strengths and where I wanted to spend my time, I ran with it.

What is your favorite part about being a stylist in New York City?

Ohhhh everything. Access to any designers at the drop of a hat, one messenger away. Being at the epicenter of fashion and culture in one big melting pot will never get old. Walking to get matcha every morning and constantly being inspired — I’ll never take that for granted.

Can you walk us through a day in your life during New York Fashion Week?

Ooo everyday is different! Fashion week typically starts ~1 month in advance — confirming client’s schedules, figuring out which events to attend, etc. The busiest days are my Super Bowl, multiple changes (5 in one day this season!), HMU, the works. It’s all planned to the minute to make sure I’m where I need to be. I’m very fortunate to be dressed by the designers of the shows I’m attending, so I definitely don’t want to miss a second!

How would you describe your personal style, and how does it influence your work with clients?

My personal style is timeless and classic but over accessorized. Whether that’s a handful of rings or layered belts, my signature touch will always be some sort of accessory moment. It definitely influences my clients in that I will always push the styling element of their looks to have an accessory that pops!

How do you stay organized and creative when managing multiple clients and projects?

I got really good advice in September of last year — a mentor told me that anything that doesnt physically require my body or brain needs to be offloaded. So I decided to bring someone (REMY!) on full time. What an insane blessing because my business has doubled in the last 6 months (and only growing!) I’m able to recharge and stay creative while she takes on the things I’m not so good at.

How has social media, especially Instagram, impacted your career and the way you connect with clients?

I 100% have social to thank for my career in styling. I was very strategic in creating content with the sole purpose of attracting styling clientele and it worked. Content has (and will probably always) be my resume. Instagram is my portfolio and the first opportunity for people to get a sneak peek into my work.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job, and how do you overcome it?

Styling is not a glamorous career by anyyyyy means. It’s a ton of organization, communication, manual labor and honestly money. It’s all worth it when your client feels extremely confident and excited to walk out the door.

What’s one styling trick or tip you think everyone should know?

ADD A BELT. When in doubt, a belt (or belts) can completely 180 your look.
