The Citizen’s Guide to NYC in Under Four Days
The Citizen’s Guide to NYC in Under 4 Days
Without a doubt, I'd consider myself a New York Romantic. Despite growing up on the slopes of Ski Town USA, the metropolitan lifestyle has had a hold on me since before I could walk, and has hence been central to my ambitions throughout my entire life. Ironically, however, I have only been to the Big Apple once for pleasure, and otherwise exclusively for business, as I’m sure you can imagine warrants a very dierent experience. But that’s not to say that I haven’t discovered, in passing, my favorite corners of the city to escape to between shows, meetings, and other mayhem. And so was born my City Guide for your next New York adventure. Perhaps we’ll bump into each other...
Day One:
The key to success when traveling is nding the perfect Headquarters. And while one could be here nor there on the matter, I know I have my favorites. “Picture this: You touch down in Queens on an overcast afternoon. August, in the true fashion of a lazy waning summer, seems to be on a hiatus, and autumn teases the air. Few things sound more appealing than a spiced drink and your favorite Italian dish—and it’s not the jet lag talking. Luggage in tow, you nd yourself in the back of a yellow taxi, making the twenty-minute drive into lower Manhattan. Sarah Vaughan is on the radio, followed by JAY-Z, a combination that only plays well in the tell-tale concrete jungle that so many dream of visiting. Umbrellas lift as you step out onto the sidewalk, and beneath a tastefully modest black awning awaits a warm smile: “Welcome to The Greenwich Hotel” (see “Nothing Says New York Nostalgia like The Greenwich Hotel”).
Now that you’re all checked in, it’s time to start this trip with a little TLC. Head over to The Tox for a full-body lymphatic massage—trust me, it’s the x you didn’t know you needed. While it may sound intense, the experience is equal parts relaxing and energizing. The Tox specialists use a combination of gentle pressure and targeted techniques designed to promote lymphatic ow and regulate digestion, helping you shake o any travel fatigue and kick-start your body’s natural detox process. Imagine stepping out with a little extra glow, and the feeling that you’ve just given your body a total refresh. It’s the kind of hidden gem treatment that makes you feel lighter, brighter, and ready to take on New York like a pro.
Where to next? Arguably the most important thing on today’s agenda: lunch.
I was rst introduced to Shuka by one of the stylists I worked with at NYFW FW24. No more than an hour fresh o my ight, absolutely famished, I took a late night cab straight into SoHo, where Liz and I
met for dinner to discuss some details for an upcoming campaign shoot. Our conversation, however, was only strictly business until the food hit the table, at which point it became rightfully centered around fried halloumi. Since then, I’ve made Shuka a priority on any NYC trip.
Subject to seasonal changes based on market availability, Chef Ayesha Nurdjaja’s Meddeiteran menu is fresh, local, and absolutely to-die-for. The atmosphere– completed by a charming view of MacDougal Street– is just as rich, transporting you into another world entirely. If you’re traveling solo, I can only bid you luck in choosing just one dish. With friends? Indulge in a few dips, Mezze, and sweet Labneh with Turkish Tea to nish. Share everything. And don’t forget a good sip– the ‘Bursa’ cocktail makes for a unique twist on an espresso martini.
Day one of any trip is always a little dreamlike in the best possible way. You’ll nd yourself wondering, “how is it possible that I woke up in my own bed this morning?” In the haze of excitement, nostalgia, and– admittedly– a little fatigue from the long day, there’s no better way to end the night than with an express entry Tiquet to the Empire State Building for sunset. Golden hour from the skyline is the ultimate dream fuel. In terms of winding down, a light dinner at your hotel– The Greenwich’s Locanda Verde does not disappoint– and a long shower will do just the trick.
Day Two:
I would be lying if I told you I didn't enjoy being a tourist in any city, but New York especially has so much to oer– can you blame me? In an ideal world, I’d begin day two of my time in the city that never sleeps with a bagel from Black Seed. Black Seed serves as my go-to not only for its artisan bagels but for its sentimental value (one too many laughs with a best friend). Every New-York-style bite is made with baking techniques from Montreal, and contains only the highest quality ingredients. My recommendation? A toasted everything bagel with lox and dill cream cheese. Take it HOT TO GO with some Stumptown coffee and make your way to the Upper East Side for this morning’s museum excursion.
Perhaps you’re in the city from May-September– hands down, you need to see The MET Museum. If you’re a fashion enthusiast like myself, believe me when I say you could spend all day in the Costume Institute’s annual installation, no matter the theme. 2024’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” by Andrew Bolton absolutely swept me o my feet. 2025 had me on the edge of my seat. That’s not to say, however, that The MET doesn't have a plethora of other fascinating galleries to explore. There is undoubtedly something, somewhere in its halls, to satiate everyone’s tastes.
But if you’re not one to linger too long, or prefer a smaller scene, The Guggenheim is another favorite of mine. Pick your poison.
After a morning indoors, you'll certainly want some fresh air. Lucky you, you’re already right on Central Park. And while the options from here are endless, it doesn't hurt to stroll– no destination required. If you nd yourself in need of a bite, there are few things more romantic than a picnic on the lawn. Pick up some street food (a loaded New York dog, if you’re feeling brave) and nd a spo in the sun. Want something more upscale? Now we’re talking. I have a few favorites in terms of food in Central Park, but I’ll give you the top of my pyramid:
Tavern on the Green is a popular choice, for a good reason. Originally built in 1870 to house the park’s sheep, the restaurant has since transformed into an iconic gathering place where history and elegance converge. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by twinkling lights and walls of glass, allowing you to dine beneath lush, leafy canopies or beside roaring replaces in the colder months. The menu is a tribute to American cuisine, oering everything from fresh seafood to hearty seasonal vegetables, crafted to honor local ingredients and classic avors. And oysters. Lots of oysters.
A large part of my family comes from Germany and Austria, and so I'm a kae snob by default. I’m partial to Café Sabarsky, blissfully reminiscent of my family’s country home a few miles south of Vienna. Though Sabarsky is in the Neue Galerie on Fifth Avenue. Close enough? With its dark wood paneling, marble tabletops, and vintage chandeliers, the café exudes an old-world elegance that’s both sophisticated and inviting. The menu is an homage to classic Austrian fare, from delicate open-faced sandwiches to rich, velvety Sachertorte.
Lastly, a ballet teacher of mine introduced me to Ella Social in the West Village. It’s the kind of place that instantly feels like a well-kept secret shared among friends. With exposed brick walls, ickering candlelight, and a warm, welcoming vibe, it’s the perfect spot for a cozy evening in the city. The menu, inspired by Mediterranean avors, invites you to linger, savoring small plates of perfectly seasoned olives, fresh seafood, and mouthwatering tapas meant for sharing. Their sangria—light, fragrant, and just the right amount of sweet—pairs beautifully with the lively atmosphere, while each dish arrives artfully plated, as pleasing to the eyes as to the palate.
Phew, can you tell I’m a foodie?
Speaking of ballet, on a full stomach and with a full heart, I recommend ending the day at the MET Opera. The moment you step onto Lincoln Center’s plaza, surrounded by the towering columns and
the glamorous crowds, you feel a little bit like you’re in your own New York movie. Inside, the opera house is pure magic: chandeliers that look like they belong in a fairy tale, red velvet seats that practically hug you, and an atmosphere thick with excitement. As the lights dim, you realize the city’s chaos has been swapped for something purely elegant. Watching the dancers glide across the stage, you’re struck by a kind of awe—no subway screeches, no honking taxis, just the quiet beauty of movement and music. For a couple of hours, you’re wrapped in a world where the only hustle is onstage, and it’s all done with impossible grace. It’s the perfect nightcap—a little slice of fantasy.
Day Three:
There's something magical about waking up early in New York—yes, even if you’re not a morning person. Or maybe I’m biased, but watching the city shake o its nightscape and catch the rst light is a reward unto itself. So, grab your coee and head for the Brooklyn Bridge to catch the sunrise. It’s quieter at this hour, and with each step, the city comes to life in soft pink and golden hues. Take your time, snap a few photos, and once you’re in Brooklyn, make your way to Jane’s Carousel and Pebble Beach. The carousel, framed by glass and skyline, is a little slice of nostalgia in the city’s most modern setting. And Pebble Beach? It’s like your own (admittedly not-so-secret) secret waterfront lookout. Sit for a while, breathe in the view, and let yourself just be in the city. I’m convinced that Brooklyn is exempt from New York Minutes; the energy here feels dierent, softer somehow—a perfect start to the day.
Now that you’ve had your tranquil morning, it’s time for a bit of Brooklyn’s bold charm. Brooklyn is known for its ea markets and vintage haunts, where hidden gems and eclectic nds await around every corner. Lose yourself among the stalls, each lled with treasures that feel like stories waiting to be told. Whether you’re into retro clothes, one-of-a-kind jewelry, or rare vinyl, the thrill is in the hunt. Let yourself get a little lost, and don’t be afraid to haggle a little—consider it part of the experience. You might just nd that perfect one-of-a-kind item to commemorate your trip.
After a morning of exploring, head to Empire Stores for lunch, where the views are as good as the food. With the historic warehouse ambiance and a lineup of restaurants that range from upscale to delightfully casual, it’s the perfect lunch stop. Pick a spot by the windows, grab something fresh and local, and unwind as you look out over the river toward Manhattan. It’s the kind of lunch that begs you to linger, enjoying each bite and letting the afternoon stretch out a little longer.
As the day winds down, head back into Manhattan. Cross the bridge again for one last look, or take a quick ride if you’re ready to kick o your shoes for a minute. A little time to freshen up, slip into
something fabulous, and you’re ready to channel your inner guy-with-navy-sheets in FiDi. Tonight’s dinner destination is Crown Shy, a place that feels both glamorous and eortlessly cool—exactly what a New York night should be. I was rst introduced to Crown Shy on a trip with one of my best friends, and I knew right away it’d be a favorite. The ambiance is chic but welcoming, and the food? A little bold, a little surprising, and undeniably rened. Every dish is crafted with an eye for elegance, and the avors keep you guessing in the best possible way. As you enjoy that last glass of wine and look back on the day—from sunrise to a candlelit dinner—you’re reminded of why New York feels like no other place. It’s a city of moments, each as unique and unforgettable as the last. And tonight, you’re right in the heart of it all, part of the magic that makes the city sparkle.
Day Four:
Ah, Day Four—time to savor the last bits of New York magic. I always save my shopping for last when traveling (pro tip: it saves you having to lug around extra bags, and gives extra time to think about your purchases). Today is all about indulging in the unique fashion heartbeat of SoHo, where boutiques line the cobblestone streets, each lled with treasures you won’t nd anywhere else. I mean, The Citizen’s Poste is a fashion magazine, no?
For a shopping day in SoHo that’s refreshingly o the beaten path, step away from the big-name boutiques and dive into some of the neighborhood’s hidden gems. Start at Flying Solo on West Broadway, where independent designers showcase avant-garde pieces you won’t nd anywhere else. This spot brings together emerging talent, oering a carefully curated selection that feels like a treasure trove for fashion adventurers. Just a few blocks away, Blue in Green specializes in Japanese denim and high-quality menswear, focusing on timeless styles crafted with impeccable detail. For something a little edgy, head to IF Boutique, a mainstay on Grand Street since 1978, known for its avant-garde European and Japanese designers like Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons—a dream for those with an eye for bold, unique fashion. Next, pop into Kirna Zabête on Broome Street, a concept store oering a stylish mix of high-end pieces from top designers alongside rising stars. End your shopping spree at The Webster on Greene Street, a multi-brand boutique where you’ll nd a range of curated luxury fashion, balancing established names with under-the-radar brands.
Now that you’ve snagged some killer pieces, let me let you in on something every fashion lover needs to know about: The Citizen’s Poste’s Style Sessions. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, soaking in the view of the river and the city’s iconic skyline. Here, there’s space to breathe, reect, and take in the quieter side of the city before the next adventure calls. And as your cab pulls up, you’ll know that while you’re leaving, a little part of New York style is coming home with you.
